So just an update. I am currently interning at a Interior Design Firm in High Point , NC By the name of Lisa Sherry Interieurs Since January I have learned so much, new terminology, new ideas, new way of looking at objects that some may see as blah, all while truly developing my designer eye. Becoming a designer seemed so far form my reach even while pursuing it as an education choice but now I see others who are very much like myself pursing and succeeding at it daily. I foresee a wonderful working relationship between the designers here at Interieurs as they continue to teach me the very basics of the trade. I also have decided to start my own collection of tear sheets of some of my favorite ideas. so be on the look out for that addition to my blog. Wish me continued luck!

My concept currently is a Hive using the definition : a place swarming with busy occupants. This would be a defining characteristic of the Hatchery on a daily basis. To be able to view the activity from the outside is a element that i would like to have throughout the space. I've thought about the physical characteristics of a hive and in not wanting to be literal in form by using the hexagonal shape, I've thought about other things like the angle used to make a hexagon, which is approx. 30 degrees, the idea of smaller spaces creating one whole is another idea that could be incorporated into the space. The material qualities of a hive are interesting and can be applied in the hatchery space as well, I want to use the opaque quality of beeswax and the idea of flexibility of the material both physically and in the ability to use things for more than one purpose.
So far my thoughts of the space begin form when you enter, currently want to keep the lower facade of the site with its unique window as is. Upon entering the space I envision a quirky but clean directory of the space a whats where directory for visitors to their respective points of interest and appointment spaces. This would be on or near the wall shared by the retail space. A lobby area where there would be seating. The retail space would be separated by a partition wall as the retail space is scooped out of the hatchery interior space like you would do with honey. The retail space is composed of three walls the partition where you enter the curved wall the takes you along the perimeter and a wall that carries you out of the retail space at 30 degrees and down a wide corridor to the right. From there you enter an exhibition space and then there is a stair case that splits and takes you to the second level, but below the stairs is a conference room where meetings for groups can be held, depending on space possible office space for Hatchery operations could be here as well. As You proceed up the stairs the gallery continues and work is dispayed through the stair case , and as you reach the second level you enter the exhibition / Performance space, and then there is a level change as you go down a corridor where there are rooms that are mixed use for collaboration spaces, classrooms, etc. This is where i am now, all spaces are not definite but this is what i would like my flow to be. Some other aspects of Hive as a concept that i hope to explore are Repetition, Swarm, Dark, Light, and
Warmth.

Some ideas of Adjacency, Order , and Composition. Ideally I would like to see the retail space go beyond the normal walled system and/ or spill out into a exhibition style space. Where consumers get the feeling of picking directly from floor samples. The Collaboration and Exhibition space would be much more intimate and the space would be located on the second level.Storage space would be needed for at least two areas and should be connected if not physically then hidden. Other basic necessities like e.g. restrooms would be found on both areas but location is not specified preferably hidden as well.

My Weekend: Inspiration?

I spent most of my weekend about 18 hours painting my workplace. The kitchen was my top priority. It was all white and everything looked very blank. I added a dark blue color to the chair rail that was already present and we painted a few other things blue. My weekend reminded me of Urban studio on Steroids. Needless to say I was drained and I don't want to see another paint brush again.

A Step in the Right Direction

So far we have made quite a few contacts in the last two day, receiving donations form Gail's too on Spring Garden in Greensboro, and well as Platos Closetand many more to come. The donations are really gonna help us in setting the standard for the type of things that will be made available to and in the Select store. The Idea of the Red Shoe Installations is taking off with many consignment shops donating to our cause. I believe that the efforts being made here will not only benefit the Salvation Army but the idea that recycling unwanted or no longer needed goods as a Positive Green Effort and Thrift Stires are a large avenue for this. The community is really eager to help and we look forward to having the Shoe installations that we create make a statment for the Salvation Army Select Store.

thinking about shoes....my first love

This week we were assigned to market our new coming Salvation Army Select store. We hopped on the idea of getting more donations and how to market it in a clever way. The idea of shoes came to mind. We broke into groups Josie, Diana and I came up with the idea of placing hundreds of shoes down a side walk. Walking side by side whether they be glued to the pavement or loose. Everyone walking aside the shoes would follow where they were headed. At the end of the road would be a huge red donation bin for the Salvation Army Select store. We then discussed this idea with our classmates and a second proposal came about. What if we scrounged up a bunch of mismatched shoes and spray painted them red with either the logo in black or a website on the bottom. We think if students were walking down Tate st. or Spring Garden they would follow the shoes curiously. We as a group can volunteer our time on a busy afternoon and take the donations. This idea can also be repeated for the grand opening. Aside from the shoe idea drawing footprints on a side walk with the logo was another way we could take this.

The Timepiece assignment here and below, has really helped me to clarify exactly what my concept is for my entire space. As you review these time piece Ideas think of how a locomotive affects the surroundings in which it travels through, the rustle of leaves, Shaking of buildings( I live beside the Railroad track ), the flicker of interior lights and the sound of that train whistle clearing its path. These affects are the source of my inspiration for my time pieces as well as my concept. The above time piece is a light grid that at the top of every hour provides a light show for your shopping pleasure.

This musical peice consisting of Organ pipes cloaked in a white coat of walls, acts as a time peice as it signifies the top and bottom and bottom of every hour with a very specific tune for each hour. The organ pipe is at a low pitch to provide a quaint melody to shop to as well as keep track of your time. The Pipe organ is remincent of the whistle of the locomotive, but decorative accents add a hint of color to the very basic color scheme of the retail space.

Given a product and a concept we have to develop a materials presentation. My Concept is Locomotion and my product is Coats Ties and Scarves. At first my instinct went to programing of the space and I lost focus of materials. So after being pulled back from LaLa land I went back to thinking about my concept more. Wanting to steer clear of " Train" like images I focused on what locomotion meant and its origin. It is derived from Locus( Latin) meaning place, center , or source, and motion meaning; change in physical position or place. Then I went on a search for imagery that read in this manner to see what I could find.Above are a few images that I found that I am thinking of pulling my color pallet from.

Initially we were inspired by the shotgun style home which in nature is very linear and in gesture you can shoot a bullet and it go straight though the front door and out the back. (The term shotgun which is derived from an African term togun meaning meeting space) , this form of housing is still found in large cities like Chicago or more rural southern communities in the south. Seen originally as a cost effective housing style for the poor, the shot gun has been reinvented with our lofts.

In beginning the design of my individual loft space I decided to do the universal loft. The layout of the floor plan was as very unique which made it a challenge in getting my initial space plan. The other issue I had was this is idea of a concept as a tool to help guide me in my design. In thinking about the XY generation which I am apart of I thought about how we’re all very different. Whether it be culturally, or some other self defined characteristic. We as a group shares many of the same qualities like the technology and internet shaping the way we live, as well as our culture from which we come. I began to think of us as selectively permeable membranes, we actively decide what we let in and out of our lives, and being an environmentally conscious generation we strive for the things that are pro mother earth.
In thinking of the space as a selectively permeable membrane I choose to create feature walls in my open studio floor plan that would allow specific elements in and out of them, in the kitchen the stratified wall system that I created let light, smell, and air circulate through my kitchen space. The other feature wall system is used to create the bathroom and is much more selective of the elements that are allowed through. The 2x6 wall slats are turned vertically verses the horizontal orientation found in the kitchen, and are blocked form the interior of the bathroom by solid resin panels in terracotta orange. Which allow specific light penetration and very little air circulation from the bathroom to other areas of the home. Flooring of choice was inspired by the shotgun house African heritage; it is peach pip(or pit) flooring by a company called stone fruit floors. The flooring adds beautiful texture and vibrant color to the space. Some other elements that were added were a ceiling fan in the bedroom that gives not only cool air but circulates heat. And finally the 4 universal units share a central open atrium that allows natural light into the space via the door and the bathroom window and in the loft space light is pours in via structural windows. This space serves the purpose of uniting this smaller community of individuals who share a common thread of having a disability.

Defining a Loft...

A floor consisting of a large unpartitioned space over a factory or warehouse or other commercial space.

Raw Loft
A loft space that is unfinished. A raw loft may not include a kitchen, toilet or sink. If the loft lacks a bathroom than communal facilities would be available. Most newly renovated "raw" lofts include their own bathroom. Raw is used to describe a loft with no or few amenities. In a raw loft everything from heating and plumbing pipes to brick walls and wiring will be exposed. However, raw lofts can still be spectacular on the inside, especially after some tender-loving care. The view, high ceilings and lighting may be enticing, and the potential can be endless.

Hard Loft
The conversion of buildings to lofts - result in what is known as the "hard loft." These are buildings with history and character. They have a harder edge of either concrete construction, or "mill" construction of exposed old brick and original wood posts, beams and floors and / or heavy timber construction. They will have the original exposed ductwork, electrical, and plumbing which are features used to complement the décor. Hard lofts are what people typically think of when they picture a loft, leave plenty of room for creativity.

New Hard Loft
With the high demand for lofts and the lack of available buildings suitable for authentic industrial style loft conversion, we now have "new hard " lofts. Loft developers say the four main features that define a loft are the high ceilings, open spaces, exposed building materials and big windows. Developers are now replicating these main features. New hard lofts will duplicate the authentic details of a hard loft with the additional improvement of being more energy efficient.

Soft Loft (Upscale)
This upscale style loft will have partitioned bedrooms with walls that may reach the ceiling. Soft lofts are usually found in newly constructed loft buildings. Soft lofts will tend to look more like traditional apartments and are usually more energy efficient than a hard loft. They have the elements of a hard loft but with softer edges. The softer edges may include carpet covering the floors and drywall encasements hiding the ductwork, electrical, and plumbing. Some may have walls that may not reach the ceiling, which are sometimes called three-quarter length.

BI-LEVEL LOFT
A Bi-level loft is a loft that has a second mezzanine level that overlooks the floor below. A loft does not necessarily have to have 2 levels.

Your answer, of course, depends on your age—or more specifically, on the generation you belong to. While pop music milestones may not seem all that important, the sum total of experiences, ideas and values shared by people of different generations makes for a melting pot of work approaches and priorities. Once you understand where the newer generations are "coming from," as a Boomer (born 1946-1964) might say, it’s easy to target your mentoring style to bring out their strengths and make the most progress. Remember to discard biases and pre-conceived notions, and you and your mentees from all generations enjoy your generational differences—and similarities!

Generation X: Declaring their Independence

The 51 million members of Generation X, born between 1965 and 1976, grew up in a very different world than previous generations. Divorce and working moms created "latchkey" kids out of many in this generation. This led to traits of independence, resilience and adaptability. Generation X feels strongly that "I don't need someone looking over my shoulder."

At the same time, this generation expects immediate and ongoing feedback, and is equally comfortable giving feedback to others. Other traits include working well in multicultural settings, desire for some fun in the workplace and a pragmatic approach to getting things done.

Generation X saw their parents get laid off or face job insecurity. Many of them also entered the workplace in the early '80s, when the economy was in a downturn. Because of these factors, they've redefined loyalty. Instead of remaining loyal to their company, they have a commitment to their work, to the team they work with, and the boss they work for. For example, a Baby Boomer complains about his dissatisfaction with management, but figures its part of the job. A Gen Xer doesn't waste time complaining-she sends her resume out and accepts the best offer she can find at another organization.

At the same time, Generation X takes employability seriously. But for this generation there isn't a career ladder. There's a career lattice. They can move laterally, stop and start, their career is more fluid.

Even more so than Baby Boomers, members of Generation X dislike authority and rigid work requirements. An effective mentoring relationship with them must be as hands-off as possible. Providing feedback on their performance should play a big part, as should encouraging their creativity and initiative to find new ways to get tasks done. As a mentor, you'll want Gen Xers to work with you, not for you. Start by informing them of your expectations and how you'll measure their progress and assure them that you're committed to helping them learn new skills. (Members of Generation X are eager to learn new skills because they want to stay employable.) Gen Xers work best when they're given the desired outcome and then turned loose to figure out how to achieve it. This means a mentor should guide them with feedback and suggestions, not step-by-step instructions.

The Millennial Generation: Up and Coming

Just beginning to enter the workplace, The Millennial Generation was born between 1977 and 1998. The 75 million members of this generation are being raised at the most child-centric time in our history. Perhaps it's because of the showers of attention and high expectations from parents that they display a great deal of self-confidence to the point of appearing cocky. As you might expect, this group is technically literate like no one else. Technology has always been part of their lives, whether it's computers and the Internet or cell phones and text pagers.

Millennials are typically team-oriented, banding together to date and socialize rather than pairing off. They work well in groups, preferring this to individual endeavors. They're good multitaskers, having juggled sports, school, and social interests as children so expect them to work hard. Millennials seem to expect structure in the workplace. They acknowledge and respect positions and titles, and want a relationship with their boss. This doesn't always mesh with Generation X's love of independence and hands-off style.

All Millennials have one thing in common: They are new to the professional workplace. Therefore, they are definitely in need of mentoring, no matter how smart and confident they are. And they'll respond well to the personal attention. Because they appreciate structure and stability, mentoring Millennials should be more formal, with set meetings and a more authoritative attitude on the mentor's part.

Provide lots of challenges but also provide the structure to back it up. This means breaking down goals into steps, as well as offering any necessary resources and information they'll need to meet the challenge. You might consider mentoring Millennials in groups, because they work so well in team situations. That way they can act as each other's resources or peer mentors.

Living Waters- Bathing and Culture

Precedence: For my cultural model for bathing I choose Judaism and my specifically the act of Baptism, its symbolism and processes. Through Baptism Judaism has used "living water" ( water from nature ) to cleanse the spirit to show acceptance of God in their lives and as an act of purifying the soul from sin. Water in this is not only therapeutic for the soul but for the mental and physical as religion has been know to influence these.

One of the things more specifically that was considered in my design process is a river as living water... In the Southern part of the US many baptisms have taken place in rivers and I developed my design on the idea of a river baptism and the idea as well that at a baptism event community id brought together to celebrate a dedication of ones self to ones beliefs.

Perspective of Living Waters Community Center: This area is where all therapeutic bathing occurs for everyone, friends and family gather here to have public and private conversation , privacy offered by the copper enveloped spaces provides for a more secluded space in a very public facility.Ramps are provided so that all can access all areas of bathing space and assistance is available when requested.

Floor Plan: the flow of traffic is very linear which gives you the since that you are going somewhere very specific and this journey is very special because you cannot enter the water spaces at just any point , you must go through the space which also encourages interaction between everyone.

Section of entrance and pool beginnings: This space is where you enter and exit the bathing area and may proceed to exit the center "Spa" it is equipped with a warm bath for those who prefer not to dip into the cold pool.

Elevation the length of the space : Show cool pool area where there is whee chair access and water levels of only 3 feet for easy play and wave action. The area is also equipped with seating space on both sides that offers a place to rest and relax.

Elevation of Curtain Wall and exit to other areas of the Center" Spa": In this 4.5 ' deep wall are 2 water falls that carry 60% living water to the pools in the space. also here is a tree encased in in the wall that acts a visual reminder of life and the power of water. The tree also acts as a visual aid to bring your eyes up to the ceiling to the unique track lighting installed.

Reflective Ceiling Plan: Shows layout of meandering track lighting (like the meandering of a river) and recessed and sky lighting that is in the space.

The final Perspective is of the Copper secluded swimming areas, these areas are the conversation spots of the facility with a circular shape they promote communication for group or individuals who require a more private place to relax.

A Place to Dine...

To begin our second studio design project we were to first design a table and side table and then a space for then to exist, I found my inspiration first in two of my favorite design eras, art nouveau and modern, I found it a challenge to find the right mix between the two and so I proceeded to pick something very important to a table which is a chair. The chair I choose was the Eboli Chair by Vincent Soto.

After reading u on the chair and its reviews it was stated that it was a mixture of 17th century Spanish architecture and modern architecture. Do i took a look and the chair a little further and also at spaces that have a baroque modern feel which I found to be very popular, the baroque style adds a hint of elegance to the more masculine modern style.

For my cultural bathing experience and research I have chosen a Jewish historical act of bathing... I found the process on a website about the bible and hope that through this process I can manifest some of the elements in to a therapeutic spa experience...I really enjoyed the entire text that I read so I decided to post it so I wouldn't lose it but he most important things are highlighted in reds. I personally feel that going through any type of therapy is faith based, faith in oneself, faith in a higher being, and also faith in others that we can depend on, can all help to deliver ourselves in trying times.

The Origin of Baptism

Although Christian Baptism may perhaps be regarded as having originated with John The Baptist, baptism by immersion in water ("baptize," whether in its original Hebrew or Greek forms, literally means to immerse in water) did not originate with Christians, or with John the Baptist. Jews practiced baptism as a traditional act of purification and initiation long before the coming of the Messiah. As a Jew (a Levite actually, John was the son of a Levite priest, Zechariah i.e. Luke 1:5, and John's mother Elizabeth, also a Levite, was a relative of Mary), the man who came to be known as John the Baptist would have been well familiar with the practice before he was sent, by some unidentified individual (John 1:33), who also may have been the one who baptized John himself (there is no Biblical record of John's own baptism) to baptize, proclaiming "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 3:2 RSV).

The Origin of Baptism

The ancient Levite priests (see Levites) were commanded to perform a symbolic cleansing in water (as described below, it wasn't simply taking a bath) before, and while, performing their priestly duties:

"But thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. He shall put on the holy Linen coat, and shall have the linen breeches on his body, be girded with the linen girdle, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water, and then put them on ... Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there; and he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people." (Leviticus 16:3-4,23-24 RSV)

Symbolic acts of cleansing weren't just done by the priests, as evidenced by Naaman the Syrian being cured of leprosy by a "baptism" in the Jordan River. He at first didn't appreciate what Elisha told him to do, or why. He later learned that it wasn't the water that healed him, it was because of his act of obedience and faith that God made him "clean":

"But Naaman was angry, and went away, saying, "Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of The Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place, and cure the leper. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?" So he turned and went away in a rage."
"But his servants came near and said to him, "My father, if the prophet [see Prophets] had commanded you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much rather, then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?" So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him; and he said, "Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel" (2 Kings 5:11-15 RSV)

This "cleansing of what ails you" took on a much greater meaning with Christianity:

"Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:21 RSV)

Christian baptism, by immersion in water (just as the dead are usually immersed in the earth), symbolizes what Christianity is all about:

"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of The Father, we too might walk in newness of life [see Resurrections]. For if we have been united with Him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His." (Romans 6:3-5 RSV)
"and you were buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead." (Colossians 2:12 RSV)
"for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring [see Physical and Spiritual Israel], heirs according to promise." (Galatians 3:26-29 RSV)

This is a photoshop document created form a few images found on the web. Our assignment was to create an image that embodied 2 words, mine were Industrial and Melancholy..... In doing this I knew that I needed to define and visualizde these words in my own mind to try and figure out what images to find to help me create my own... I am very happy with the outcome I feel like there is balance between the moon and the man made island object and that the overall color of blue induces the idea of sadness but I also wanted the over cast of light to show that they weren't in that light and were in a since in the dark, in a state of depression and the metal reflection helps show the industrialization of this island as well as the building on such a small area. Over all, once i found images i like they themselves inclined me to the idea.....very fun.

Candlestick Phone in Saarinen Style Conference Room

I have decided to place the British candle stick phone in a conference room lobby that could have been a part of the Saarinen house belonging to Eliel Saarinen and his family that he designed 1928-1930. This home contained both living and work space. The space that I rendered that could have potentially been a part of the home is a transitional space where work areas meet living areas. I choose to place the phone in this specific area because telephones were found in common areas, and not in personal rooms during the time of its development. The conference room lobby is a space that the family could make calls, and visitors could use the telephone. If Eliel was waiting on a call during a conference with the academic team, calls could also be taken with ease. The phone sits on a table which is a common place for a candle stick phone or any phone. The room is designed in the Art Deco style which is apparent of Saarinen’s work.

The Peacock Sconce was made around 1899 by Alexander Fisher. A sconce is used as a holder of a light source on a wall. He designed the sconce for the sole purpose to be exhibited and not used within a home. However, if the sconce were to be used within a living space, the space would be designed in the style of the arts and crafts movement. There is also a strong influence of art nouveau, because of the peacock motif relating back to nature.

In comparison, the two spaces are very different in style and use of materials. The art nouveau style represented uses metal in organic forms, where as the Art Deco styled room is made up of more natural materials (e.g. wood framed windows and furnishings).

For th precedence study for the Shelter/Bus charette our Yoda group (which consist of Hanna , Mira, and Myself) looked outside of the United States to Mauritania a city near the Sahara in Africa. Mauritania (Arabic: موريتانيا‎ Mūrītāniyā), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in northwest Africa. The country is generally flat, forming vast, arid plains broken by occasional ridges and cliff like outcroppings. Approximately three quarters of Mauritania is desert or semi desert. As a result of extended, severe drought, the desert has been expanding since the mid-1960s. To the west, between the ocean and the plateaus, are alternating areas of clayey plains (regs) and sand dunes (ergs), some of which shift from place to place, gradually moved by high wind. The dunes generally increase in size and mobility toward the north. The nation's coastal waters are among the richest fishing areas in the world, but overexploitation by foreigners threatens this key source of revenue. The country's first deepwater port opened near Nouakchott in 1986. In recent years, drought and economic mismanagement have resulted in a buildup of foreign debt. As a member of the Peace Corp. Mira Eng-Goetz lived and worked with the people of the village of Kenobi in Mauritania. Experiencing there day to day celebrations and Struggles as they live out there lives in the Desert like conditions which turn into mosquito infested Waste lands during torrential rainy season. In our sketch models below we chose to develop interventions that would help the village on kenobi through both there rainy and dry seasons.

This a a water reservoir that would be linked via piping to the well that supplies the village with water. This is a form of water harvesting that is much needed during Mauritania's dry arid season.
This is a grainery and it is place upon a platform to prevent water damage to the store grain which is essential to the Kenobi yearly food supply. It also would be lined with a tarp.
This well was inspired by a common need throughout the under developed world, where water sanitation in uncovered wells is often an issue. This design proposes that the user simply lower and raise the the well cover with a pulley system.

These two photos are for a proposed waiting area for the local hospital in Mauritania. Currently there is no area for waiting and patients when the hospital is full line the hall ways. This would allow for a more comfortable enviroment for both patient and physicain.

This last model is a mock market that would be on elevated land that curved so that during the rainy season the market would not flood. Lining the market would also be rock pits at could support human weight and would drain water to the water table faster.

I really appreciate the structural elements of all of the sketch models.

6 ideas to communicate to the community what were doing and how they can get involved:

#1 Shop Dropping

During this charette we focused on how to get the word out to the community at UNCG and also within the community of Greensboro. On of the ideas we came up with is called Shop Drop. Basically it consists of the oppisite of shop lifting. We would buy goods and replace the labels with our own as a way of spreading the word. The labels could be of our different bus shelter ideas to our buses to our studio mission statement. This is just a way of putting our idea out there in places that every one goes. Once we replaced the labels we would place the goods back in the store where customers are free to take the free of charge.

#2 Digital Display

Imagine as your walking or driving through campus and you look upon the Jackson Library and you see an image you have never seen before upon that building. The next day as you are passing through you notice another image and maybe this time you actually known the person in the image. Each day after that a new image appears upon the building. Maybe eventually your picture shows up on the building. Each day people would continue to pass through campus and see what has changed on the building or if their picture is up. The last day writing appears promoting our second year studio. Through this idea the community sees that the IARC second year studio is designing the better the community.

An idea for a way to get our work for the year would be to install this framing in at the south centered entrance to the center city park. Its a central location that people form all over the city come to relax and enjoy time alone, or with friends and family. This is a place in the park where pictures can be taken that give the back drop of the beautiful scenery and available here will be information about what were doing as a studio and contact information, which will be located on the back side of the structure.

Codes+Charette

Our experience with the various requirements to support human activities and needs concerning our shelter:bus was challenging. Although we, as a group, thought that we had designed our buses thoughtfully, the "codes +" charrette on proved differently.

What we would recommend to other designers when creating a space in which humans will interact with, is to pay close attention to every detail, large and small, to ensure that the experience one will have with the space will not only be enjoyable, but equally accessible for all. For example, when considering a space for an individual who may be in a wheelchair, you need not only think about the space it will take to enter the room, but also the dimensions for turning around, turning around an object, backing up, and approaching the space horizontally and vertically. These considerations, unfortunately, were not thought of when designing our prototype shelter:bus. The codes that need be applied to most every space are very helpful in further considering your design and its impact on those we will interact with it. For example, when sitting at a desk you must think of how much clearance an average person would need and also how much someone who is not average would need and combine the two. The codes really helped us, as a group, to look at every inch of our space differently.

The overall experience with the "codes +" charrette was difficult at first but was very helpful in the end. The regulations and requirements to support human activities is something that will enhance our designing capabilities because they really taught us to not only look at our space in our shelter:bus completely different, but also that we must always consider who we are designing for in order to have a successful and welcoming design.

Obviously I took my trip before I read so when riding I didn't think about the bus ride in reflection of the historical movement that the 60's brought about, but on my bus ride there was a sign in honor of Ms. Rosa Parks and Her Sitting. The sit in movement brought about great change in the Greensboro area, as well as many other cities in the south. I still am proud of the fact that these were people who were very proud, and some of the best of their race, because they're aren't many who could do what they did without fear, discouragement, and the ability to carry on with "passive insistence" as was Quoted in the Civil and Civil Rights Reading. Its a true sign of strength and how one person can inspire many, and as a human race together through uplifting one another can true cause revolution.

My bus ride on the GTA was definitely an experience.

Throughout the bus are signs, very minimal advertisements, like you would have in New York or other major cities, just rules and regulations, and ways to contact GTA's customer service.

The first thing I noticed as a Bus rider on my route was the tremendous amount of car lots. now as a normal car driver, I normally ignored all the car lots down wendover and may glance and think, Trade In! But as a bus rider I felt as though they were cramming cars down my throat, by one! Only 500 down! etc... I also thought about the individuals who choose to ride the bus. Because it is a choice, and a very smart choice. The cost is minimal when comparing to a taxi, and you have the option to read or concentrate on other things instead of driving.
In the front of the bus the seats are reserved for seniors and people with disabilites, which is great, its kinda like a parking lot they usually get all the good seats but its for a very good, reason, and I'm sure there are state and federal regulations that put those rules in place.

As i was riding i began to notice the different ways in which we travel , cars, trucks, mopeds, bikes, we all have our own preferred methods of getting around and they're all at our disposal for a small/large expenditure.
Greensboro as a city is consistently building, and hope that as Stewards in our world they are looking for "greener" ways, so that in the cities future we can conserve our resources.
So as a second time bus rider, I was a little hesitant about this cord above my head, I was about a half a mile form my stop and and really didn't know when to pull it, so my ride ended up being a little longer than expected. I also noticed all of the safety signs, since buses are very much a public institution in themselves, it would only make sense that emergency exits are clearly marked, and i was very glad to see them in place.

The Uncg water tower is a great landmark, it lets me know that i'm on my way home! the bus ride was nice, people were looking at me kinda weird because of all the pictures i was taking.
I didn't feel comfortable just snapping pictures of people while they were on the bus, the idea seemed very judgmental and wrong, so I got a picture of this nice lady on her way on the bus.

Goodbye RT.1 GTA, You maybe seeing me soon.

Over all my ride went well, I plan on using our cities public transit system again.

Reflection: First Week of Classes

I was so excited to get back to school to get back to work. But on the eve of this event i got on blackboard and saw where my classes had posted their syllabi. Lets just say my printer ran out of ink ( lol it was low anyway)! I realized at that moment I had a very busy semester of me, and its best to stay ahead of the game. Begin on Monday we were all given our assignments for the week which turned to chaos on Wednesday is deciding what we were going to do for our presentations as a group. By Friday the tension had mounted as the entire class had to devise a way to make out individual elements cohesively exist in one installation , my blood pressure was up!!! But by the end of the day everything was done and everyone was happy! For the weekend I went with some friends to emerald point and almost drown to start off the second week of classes!!

In this assignment I was to create a mental map to the News and record, luckily for me, i knew how to get there, so i already had a mental map, the only thing that i didn't know was where the front door of the news and record was, and wen i got there i found a pleasant surprise. There was this cool bench sculpture, made up of copper and it had news paper prints as its supporting structure which id pretty cool.

A distinctive and legible environment not only offers security but also heightens the potential depth and intensity of human experience.

The series of photos below were apart of the process for our final spring semester project 2008! We started by creating unique sleeping quarter which are depicted in the two photos from the bottom. The we each received a client and had to create a space "Habitable Wall " for that individuals use. The next few pictures are of sketch models at 1" scale.This particular design came from a doodle that I had randomly drawn on a piece of paper and I I thought , what if those lines were walls, the form was altered to create what I was going to be a Habitable wall.

This Model pictures above is very much for me the essence of this project its a functional wall space but its missing something.

Yes it may look like some random prison cell but its actually a room like many unique rooms at the propeller island hotel, Berlin.

This a traditional Japanese style hotle called a ryoken where you bed is the floor.

This hotel maybe alittle to minimalist in style for some. but the rooms are individual and made up of big ol pipes.

Umm alittle scarey if you ask me a COFFIN BED.

THE Floating BED!!! yeah its cool but also 1.5 million dollars. I don't think i could do it and plus i have a fear of heights.

The Buildings I choose to include in my 10 are all examples of styles or define words that i didn"t at first have a keen grasp on . I was curious as to what words like renaissance, post modern, and modern all mean in the world of design and Architecture.

Googie

"Googie" describes a futuristic, often outrageous, building style that evolved in the United States during the 1950s. Googie architecture was designed to attract customers.
The name "Googie" comes from a famous coffee shop in Los Angeles. Like the shop, Googie buildings often have flashing lights, sharp angles, boomerang and flying saucer shapes, and lots of glass and steel. On the east coast, googie ideas were expressed in the zig zag rooflines of coffee shops.

Also Known As: The Googie style is sometimes called called Coffee House Modern, Doo-Wop, Populuxe, and Space Age.

Examples: "Googie" is just one type of Roadside Architecture that evolved after World War II when Americans began to spend more time in cars. Other types of American Roadside Architecture include Tiki and Mimetic. Tiki buildings look like Polynesian huts. Mimetic buildings are shaped like the products they sell. For example, a hot dog restaurant might be shaped like a giant hot dog.

VICTORIAN STICK STYLE HOME

The house shown above is an early example of Victorian Stick architecture. The exterior walls are ornamented with "stickwork," or decorative half-timbering. The house also has brackets, rafters, and braces. These details are not necessary structurally. They are decorations that imitated architecture from the medieval past.

Victorian Stick Style homes have these features:
Rectangular shape
Wood siding
Steep, gabled roof
Overhanging eaves
Ornamental trusses (gable braces)
Decorative braces and brackets

TIDE WATER STYLE

Tidewater homes have extensive porches sheltered by a broad hipped roof. The main roof extends over the porches without interruption.

FOSHAY TOWER ART DECO

Wilbur Foshay, who spent $119,000 for a three-day bash in August 1929 to celebrate the opening of the Foshay Tower, hired John Philip Sousa to create and play a special march for the occasion. Unfortunately for Sousa, the $20,000 check bounced; unfortunately for Foshay, the crash destroyed his paper profits, he lost the building, was convicted of mail fraud and spent three years in Leavenworth.

JIN MAO TOWER

MODERN

The Jin Mao building is an 88 story retail, commercial,a nd hospitality centre with The Grand Hyatt Hotel with in the top 38 stories. It was designed mimicing the shape of a chinese pagoda and with variations of the number 8. The lowest segment of the building is sixteen stories high and eash succeeding segment is 1/8 smaller than it predecessor. Built in shaghai China in 1999 by the american architectral team of Skidmore, Ownings, and Merrill.

SONY BUILDING

POST MODERN

The building that was built for AT&T headquartes but now serves as the sony building in New York, NY is a very sleek skyscrapper designed by architect philip johnson in 1958. today the Sony building is cited ad a materpiece of post modernism. Criticized in its day for its incorporation of romantic details suc as pediments into such a sleek sky scrapper.

Postmodernism: combing new ideas with traditional forms., familiar shapes and details are used. Some other post modern architects include: Robert Venturi ,Denise Scott Brown and Micheal Graves.

This space exist in a Manhattan duplex that was converted into one home for a Californian on the east coast. The designers of the space were Karen Stonely and Peter Pelsinski of a young Firm Span. I really love this space because it is very warm in texture and color and the light fixture is so unique, it gives off the perfect amount of light that gives the nook some ambiance. What I am not to pleased with is the kitchen although you can"t see it from this picture its very streamlined and opposite in feel from the nook which it is right beside. It looks too hard with its steel cabinetry and counter tops . The flow through the house stops here, its too abrupt.

This is a shore side home owned by a couple in Wisconsin and is the epitome of a well designed themed home. Life at sea. It is colorful but the color dosen"t over power any aspect of the home. Its got a lot of spunk.

I absolutely love the look of this building its so unique and stands out in its environment , not only in color choice but in shape. This is a very modern home made with green techniques with its use of glass for natural lighting throughout the home. Half of the buildings rooms are under ground so they see very little to no light but in those places are family rooms and guest rooms.The description given by the architect was , the first floor is a glass pavilion that allowed the view to shoot straight through, then floated a jewel box of bedrooms and other private areas over the transparent pavilion in the canopy of leaves. I believe it succeeds in its goal as a gem.

This beauty of a home is in Nashville, TN on 400 acres and extends out over a 50 acre private lake. To me it has a Tuscany feel with its terracotta roofing and the light colored stone. It is a very beautiful home. It interior is just a beautiful as the exterior. The couple chose very neutral colors in the home so not to distract you from its natural beauty of the materials used to make the building and the beautiful of the lake that surrounds the home on one side.

This is a very unique Seattle home. The interior space of this home is very contemporary with neutral choices with splashes of color in reds and oranges. My favorite aspect of this hill top home is its view of the city below and its wonderful use of natural light with the ceiling to floor windows that can be covered with natural bamboo shades. I really enjoy this space and though i have a severe fear of heights would love to reside there.

Norman Foster is and architect that I found in Architectural digest as a leader in innovative green design . His buildings are uniquely fascinating and create a spectical for the eye. I find his work absolutely stunning.

The tower will provide a location for living, working, and leisure, designed sustainably to minimize site impact and be sensitive to the harsh Siberian climate. Never one to sacrifice aesthetics for function, Foster has cladded the 280-meter tower in faceted glass to maximize daylight through the winter months while reflecting natural light to illuminate the interior spaces.

In terms of green features, the tower centers around a South-facing atrium, which maximizes daylight and solar gain, minimizing the need for artificial lighting and providing insulation during the colder months. The structure will also rest lightly on the land and rely on renewable energy sources.

Space for residential, office, hotel, and retail programs will be integrated, topped off by a dramatic viewing platform and restaurant at the tower’s summit.

This is a rendering of the Norman Foster 118- story Russian tower in Moscow. This will be a mixed use building, a pioneer of green architecture, and is slated for completion in 2012.

This shading assignment was very unique because I have never really shaded conciously before, ahhh! Yeah I was never an "artist" so didn"t do these types of things. So now I'm learming and what I have learned so far is that some techniques are definitely more easy to use than others. The two I used in this assignment were random and cross- hatch. I like cross hatch of the two and thats only because that picture turned out better, better use of my strokes in controlling heavier and lighter shading. but I'm sure we will be doing this again so I'll practice for next time.

This is my middle mix of the two projects. How I came to this decision you ask, well the columns of Monique's egg project were bought together with an additional and created a box shaped similar to what is found in Phillips project. now this box was suppose to have doors but that hasn't quite happened yet.

At first glance I was turned away form this space because of the decorative items in it, but after reading the article I love it! This a a interior of a home in New Mexico that is owned and maintained by Myron Goldfinger an architect and his family. This home is a part of a triad of homes owned by the family and each reflecting it exterior environment. The floors are stone the same color of the sand of the desert area that surrounds the home. As for there personal choice of decorative items they were a compilation of a common interest between Mr. and Mrs. Goldfinger which was Folk art they have piece throughout all three of their homes and I find this to be a eclectic mixture of objects that truly reflect the home owner, something every home should do.

OK might be the last issue but probably not I actually really enjoyed doing the research involved with this project. There is a lot of really great info on textiles and the future of the textile industry out there. These are things we will definitely need to learn and be knowledgeable about in our future careers. Well here it is, this is my place to hold my memory. The idea behind this creation is of 3 uniting to become one. The memory that evoked this design is actually me , my brother, and sister coming together to raise one child, my nephew Zhen. That is why i chose the triangular shape when 3 sides come together they create one solid object. After i decided to use the triangle the rest of the object just developed on its own. The Final piece ( in blue) is twice the size as the initial iteration. The initial iteration is made up of triangles all having 3" sides. In the last I chose to use 6" sides to give the object a little more functionality for everyday use.

People in space! This Assignment was probably one of the most difficult to complete. I say this only because on a daily basis I am rarely around more than one person at a time that is still enough for me to draw them in there element. As you can see in the picture directly to the left. I began to draw the person in front of the cook and they got up before I could finish.

BIKE CONTOUR

This is bicycle contour is a perfect example to me how we have a preconception of how a bike is suppose to look and what we see in reality. With this piece i start in the middle and went to theright and I made the wheel in what i thougt it looked like and not in it actual likeness, as i did on the left side with the front wheel of the bike. By making this mistake it made it extremely hard to comlete the interior of the back tire. I hope I have learned this lesson for future reference.

The picture on the left and right are of the same building but from 2 different views. The first picture was rushed and was done under some slightly extreme conditions. I was beginning to be irritated so it isn't the best work. The second picture was done under similar time restrictions but i was more comfortable with the location and settings so it turned out a lot better. I suppose the your physical environment can effect your quality of work if you let it.

This was my first successful blind contour and I can honestly say the only part i glanced in on with this one was the nail portion of my thumb and the etched lines in the base of the palm of my hand. It actually didn't tun out too bad. But thats my opinion!

After completing this assignment It allowed me to really see how the space within an object really create the object and give you a sound bases for scale and a really great starting place for any drawing. I foresee using this technique in many drawings in the future.

This fellow looks awfully sad, doesn't he? This is my replication of Philippe Halsman"s famous image of Einstein. We used this picture to help us learn how to follow a line.If you have a chance try to drawn this just as it is, and follow the lines, don't try to look at the object as a whole.
